One of the questions that we often get asked is:
What is a good and tasty high reward treat for my dog?
The simple answer is that there are several and it all depends on your dogs particular taste and if you want to purchase something from the shops, or make it yourself.
For instance, shop bought cocktail sausages chopped up will work wonders for some dogs, others prefer cooked chicken, and some of our clients use squeezey cheese. Ultimately it doesn't matter what treat you use, as long as it fine for your dog's digestion and it is considered high-reward. By this, we mean a treat which is only used when training, so your dogs usual kibble wouldn't be considered a high reward in your dogs eyes.
We often cook up batches of 'Liver Cake' for our dogs, as they go mad for it!
Plus a little goes a long way.
I should warn you now if you don't like Liver - the smell when cooking may not be for you :)
Once cooked and cooled, you can cut the liver cake into small training pieces.
If stored in a Tupperware container in the fridge, we advise to use within 3 days. However you can also freeze for upto 3 months- this particular recipe makes quite a lot, so we tend to freeze some. Also as Liver cake is quite rich - make sure that you cut into small pieces.
What you will need?
Liver cake is simple to make and only a few ingredients are required:
400 grams of Liver
1 large egg
150g of wholemeal or spelt flour
How to make?
Preheat the oven to 180-c
Blitz the egg and liver in a processor or blender until smooth
Combine the flour into the mix in a separate bowl until well mixed in
Transfer to a lined baking tin
Bake for 30 mins
Leave to cool
Cut into the desired pieces
We haven't known any dogs who don't like Liver Cake, some of our clients also add a little bit of garlic to the above recipe - however there are mixed thoughts on garlic in the recipe, so please always check with your vet if you are in doubt.
For reference, we cook the recipe as mentioned about without garlic :)
A word of caution the kitchen will smell when you are cooking up Liver cake, so if you are not a fan of Liver (like myself) it pays to have a window open and then wash up straight away to get rid of the smell! Even if you detest it like me, I am sure that you will agree that your dogs are worth the effort - and they will thank you for it.
Hope you enjoy this mini blog post - happy cooking!
